Why Counsellors Do Not Offer Medicare Rebates
Often, clients who are enquiring about my counselling services ask about Medicare rebates. To be eligible to receive a Mental Health Plan, a person needs to visit a GP and have a mental health assessment. The GP uses a clinical diagnostic manual to determine if a person's symptoms meet the criteria for a mental illness and to evaluate how it is affecting their daily life, whether the issue is psychological, behavioural, or physiological.
While some individuals may suffer from severe mental disorders requiring clinical diagnosis, prescription medication, and other medical treatments, the majority of clients can greatly benefit from evidence-based therapies and interventions to address their challenges and difficult experiences, whether it is anxiety, depression, life transitions, work-related stress, business challenges, or relationship issues.
You need to be diagnosed with a mental disorder to be entitled to the mental health plan and the Medicare rebate. A Mental Health Plan is provided by a social worker, psychologist, or psychiatrist. There is a specific number of sessions per year, and once your plan is completed, your mental health professional will send a report to the GP. These records are archived in the person’s health records.
If you need further assistance, you will need to pay the full amount unless you are granted a discount. Most psychologists charge about $241.00 for a 45-60 minute session.
For some clients, having a diagnosed mental disorder on their records is not an issue and is perfectly fine. However, many patients are not aware of this process. Therefore, it is important to note that these records may be accessible to employers, especially when applying for government positions or in legal situations.
Privacy and confidentiality are at the core of the counselling profession, and the counsellor is not required to release the client’s information unless a client is in danger to self or others. Counselling support is not included in the Medicare Mental Health Plan. Although GPs regularly refer clients to my private practice, I am a registered Professional Counsellor, extensively trained, and I offer a holistic approach to counselling for women, young people, and couples.
I work with clients who are determined and ready to improve their quality of life. Those who want to restore their mental wellbeing and prevent more severe mental illness. My ideal client is someone who is not only interested in improving but has a reason why and is committed to transforming their life.
The Value of Investing in Therapy
Investing in therapy, whether it is counselling or coaching, is an investment in yourself. It is a commitment to your personal growth, mental health, and overall wellbeing. Therapy provides a safe and supportive environment where you can explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. It helps you gain insights into your challenges and develop strategies to overcome them.
Therapy can improve your relationships, enhance your emotional resilience, and empower you to make positive changes in your life. It is an opportunity to heal from past traumas, build self-awareness, and cultivate a more fulfilling and balanced life. By investing in therapy, you are prioritizing your mental health and taking proactive steps towards a healthier and happier future.
Your story matters. I believe that an honest conversation in a safe and non-judgmental environment can facilitate healing of the mind, body, and spirit. Difficult experiences do not need to be pathologized or numbed; they need to be heard and understood. I am committed to supporting my clients and building their mental capacity and resilience to help them break free from habits, belief systems, and limitations.
